Congratulations, you’ve done it!  You found love, you got hitched and now you need to make it officially official by changing your name. No need to feel overwhelmed! Your San Diego Wedding Planner has you covered on ALL bases from what to change and how! Below we have laid out all the *major* steps you should first take when it comes to changing your name.

Social Security Card

The first thing you should change once you’ve tied the knot is the name on your social security card. You will be filing to “correct” your name on your card and to do so you must fill out Form SS-5, mail it in or bring it to any Social Security office, along with certified copies of your ID and marriage certificate.

Drivers License

Next up…. everyone’s favorite place: the DMV!  For the state of California, to change your name on your driver's license, you must: complete a Driver License or Identification Card Application (Form DL44), provide proof of your legal name change (your new Social Security Card & Marriage License will be needed)., surrender your old driver's license and pay the $27 duplicate license fee.

Passport

Changing your passport varies depending on when your passport was issued. Use this link to find out what category you fall into. You will need a new photo, marriage certificate, old passport and the forms filled out (based on when your last passport was issued).

Bank Cards & Credit Cards

Remembering to change your name on all of your accounts, including credit cards, checks, and even Paypal is very important! Some places may allow you to make the switch over the phone, but be aware some banks require an in person visit. You will need your updated security card, your updated drivers license and your marriage certificate.

Car Title/Registration

In California, to change your name on your car title or registration, use this link. This varies from state to state so be sure to research your state carefully!

Employer

Employers must be notified about name change so income is reported to Social Security, tax refund will be on time and to avoid gaps in your benefits.

Insurance Accounts (Car, Life, Home etc.)

If your insurance is through your workplace, contact your HR department to help update your information.  If your insurance is not through an employer or through a state or federal agency, call to let them know you’ve changed your name.

Utilities

This applies to any services that bill you. This can range from your basic home needs (gas, water, electric) to phone bills all the way down to your Netflix account. You can change the name either online or by calling.

Tips and Tricks

-Do not book your honeymoon flight or hotel in your “new” name since it won’t be legal yet. Book your flight and hotel in your maiden name!

-If you own a business and have legal documents that need to be updated, discuss these changes with your business attorney
